The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission seized more than 300 kilograms of contraband, including shisha tobacco, cigarettes and flavoured cigars that totalled $116,000 in lost tax revenue.
The contraband was found in January at Alex’s Convenience Store on 118th Avenue and 101st Street.
Hiwot Atnafu and Alemayehu (Alex) Girma were charged with fraud over $5,000 and trafficking in contraband tobacco. They are scheduled to appear March 16 in Edmonton Provincial Court.
Contraband tobacco can be recognized by its lack of a red “Duty Paid Canada” stamp on the package.
