A woman was airlifted to hospital after crashing her car into a Welcome to St. Albert sign Thursday morning.

The 34-year-old female driver was pinned under the steering wheel of her car after her vehicle veered off the road on Highway 2 near Neil Ross Road outside of St. Albert at around 7:40 a.m.

“(The car) exited the highway, went into the ditch and collided with the Welcome to St. Albert sign,” said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Laurel Scott.

The driver was airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Emergency crews reported the woman had serious injuries, but was in stable condition.

No other vehicles were involved. The woman was alone in the car.

Police said it was too early to tell what may have caused her to veer off the highway.
