On Saturday, we asked you Edmontonians to tell us what you think makes the city tick. We’re calling it the 50 Things That Define Edmonton. And remember, it’s not limited to a person, place or thing – it can be any of the sights, smells and sound that pop into your head when you think of Edmonton.

Our project launch has already been huge success. We’ve gotten a ton of great responses about the many things – both good and bad – that define Edmonton to you.

Here are some of the responses we’ve received:

“Wishing for summer for six months, then cursing it because of all the mosquitoes it brings.” – John Feltham (Twitter @TheFeltham)

“The amazing theatre scene in #yeg. That’s what brought me here and why I stay. Especially around @NextfestArtsCo time.” – Taylor Chadwick (Twitter @taylor_chadwick)

“#crazyprairieweather. We can have anything from desert to lush oasis, -40 and 2 feet of snow to tornadoes and 100 mm of rain.” – Carl Busch (Twitter @BuschCarl)

The weather: “Our promotional tag line: Come to Edmonton! Escape the heat!” – Daniel Hagg

The smells: “Even amid the frost warnings, even when the road is still covered in so much sand that my bicycle skids each time I brake – as I ride through my neighbourhood the flowers, the shrubs, the trees send out their perfume to share with me and other passersby. And it’s wonderful.” – Kelly Arbeau.

The Argyll Velodrome: “It brings a special uniqueness to the region.  It strengthens the ever growing cycling culture in Edmonton.” – Meika Ellis.

Driving into downtown: “My favourite thing about Edmonton is driving along Saskatchewan Drive early in the morning seeing downtown buildings. It makes me feel so proud being an Edmontonian.”- Jasmin Tungul

What do you think? Got a different suggestion? Tell us! Here are the different ways you can submit your ideas:

Twitter and Instagram: Tweet us, post your photo and comment to Instagram, using the #50thingsyeg hashtag.
