Two dogs were captured Thursday after they attacked and injured two people near 162 Avenue and 59A Street.

The report of a mauling came about 10 a.m.

Having cornered the flat-coated retrievers at a home in a cul-de-sac off 162 Avenue, the animals became aggressive toward the firefighters who arrived first. City animal control officers were called.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., one dog was captured without incident.

The other dog refused to budge and officers used a fire extinguisher to try to force the dog toward animal control officers. It fled several blocks east, holing up in the backyard of a home on Hollick-Kenyon Road.

Firefighters scaled a fence as animal control officers moved into the yard and neighbours looked on.

They eventually put a noose around the dog’s neck and both animals were taken away.

Keith Scott, city co-ordinator of animal services, said they have launched an investigation into the attack.

“In any serious dog attack, we are able to hold onto the dogs for up to 21 days, and that allows us to ensure that we can go through the investigation and make a decision and go forward from there,” he said.

Edmonton police said they were not involved in any investigation “at this stage.”

Scott said he was unsure of the injuries suffered in the attack.
