Usually happens like so: randomly bump into Ben Sures on the street, he hands over his new album.
This repeats in various alleys and cafes in town, at shows, even a bar in Roncesvalles Village in Toronto. Sures gets around, he’s just around every corner. ”This might be the only blues album you ever like,” he jokes, following up on a conversation during the Works, where he curated the musical lineup in Churchill Square. There was blues, in thick slices.
We discuss Honeyboy Edwards and R.L. Burnside, Bombchan gets a nod. He notes Paul Reddick is playing the ARTery tonight, and we part ways.
Though it’s not the only blues album I’ve ever dug, Son of Trouble is a fantastic departure for Sures, starting with the smoky French number Je Chanterai pour Toi by Boubacar Traore. Song lyrics are sometimes David Wilcox funny, like “Love will kick your ass” and “I’m Darth Vader with a carburetor.” There’s even a song, in a good way, that brings up Wayne Gretzky.
Check out the album here, it’s delightful. Or just walk down the street, Ben’s out there.
