A 47-year-old man has been charged with going nearly double the speed limit in connection to Edmonton’s first fatal collision of 2017.
Edmonton police responded to a two-vehicle collision just after 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, near 144 Avenue and Ebbers Boulevard.
A 2003 Toyota Corolla was travelling south on Ebbers Boulevard attempting to turn east on 144 Avenue at a stop sign when it was struck by a 2016 Ford F150.
Investigators believe the Ford F150 had been travelling nearly twice the posted speed limit — doing 111 km/h in a 60 km/h zone — at the time of the crash.

Police investigate a collision between two vehicles on 144 Avenue which they closed and Ebbers Road in north Edmonton, Friday, Jan. 20, 2017.
The 43-year-old male driver of the Toyota Corolla was taken to hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the Ford F-150 sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Gary Stokes, 47, was charged with speeding under the Traffic Safety Act. He is scheduled to appear in court March 16.
Edmonton saw 24 traffic fatalities in 2016.
