Police officers broke a window to rescue a baby who had been left alone in a car in frigid temperatures Tuesday.

Southwest division officers were called to a commercial parking lot near 96 Street and 82 Avenue at around 12:15 p.m. by a concerned citizen, who saw a baby locked in an unattended vehicle.

When they arrived, officers found a seven-month-old child alone in the back seat of a Toyota.

After officers scoured nearby businesses trying to find the driver without success, they broke the front driver’s side window to rescue the crying baby.

The baby’s 30-year-old mother returned about 10 minutes later and is now facing a charge of causing a child to be in need of intervention.

If you find a child left alone in a car, Edmonton police recommend you follow these steps:

  • Call the police immediately with the location, licence plate and description of the vehicle
  • Stay with the child until help arrives, assisting where possible
  • Ask other passersby to help canvas the area to find the driver
  • Don’t let fear or a lack of time prevent you from reporting a child left in a car, it could mean the difference between life and death
