More than 130 charges have been laid against 40 people as part of an Edmonton police operation targeting drug trafficking in and around LRT stations.

The investigation, dubbed Operation Derailment, began in late 2016 and included the city police LRT beat team and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s drug undercover street team.

LRT beat team Sgt. Jacob Montgomery said in a Thursday statement the operation was the first of its kind to target “street-level drug trafficking in and around Edmonton’s LRT stations.”

The majority of 135 charges were for drug trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime.

Another 17 criminal warrants and two bylaw warrants were executed.

Of the people charged, 35 were male and five were female.

Almost 18 grams of methamphetamine and 1.25 grams of crack cocaine were seized during the operation.
