Police have a suspect in a suspicious death in southwest Edmonton discovered Sunday afternoon.
Officers responded to a weapons complaint at around 3:15 p.m. near 106 Street and 61 Avenue.
A man was found dead at the residence, said an Edmonton Police Service news release.
Homicide detectives took one man into custody Sunday night, police said later Sunday. No names were released.
A garage door at the rear of the property was wide open and blocked off with police tape. Police later increased the size of the cordoned-off area, blocking off the alley with tape and police vehicles and adding police tape around the front yard. The front and back doors to the home were also open.
Anne Bennett, who lives in her childhood home nearby, said the home is a rental with an older couple living upstairs and a tenant downstairs.
“They suspected there was something going on in the basement, but it’s a rental house, so they can’t really do too much,” Bennett said.
Recently, the landlord told the tenants to clean out the garage, Bennett said. The landlord offered to give some of the items away.
Bennett thought she heard more sirens than usual along the busy road but it wasn’t until an officer knocked on her door that she knew something was wrong.
Joyce Swanson said she has lived in the neighbourhood for 40 years and hasn’t seen anything like the police presence behind her home.
“It’s shocking,” Swanson said. “I saw the ambulance in front of my house and thought, ‘How could that be?’ Then I saw the police cars.”
Jason Patriquin said he has lived on the block for 20 years and knows the people who live in the house.
“When you see this many police, something bad happened,” he said.
“They’re good people.”
He said a man and woman live upstairs and a man lives in the basement.
