Edmonton police withdrew all charges Friday against a man in connection to a fatal hit-and-run that killed an 18-year-old man.

Justin Handbury, 31, had turned himself in Wednesday to Strathcona County RCMP.

He was charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, three charges related to dangerous driving, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and two counts of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

A police news release said only “new information” led investigators to withdraw the charges.

On Monday, a Ford F-150 pickup drove through a fence into a yard near 190 Street and 85 Avenue, hitting 18-year-old Jade Belcourt, after the truck’s driver had an altercation with Belcourt’s older brother, according to a relative.

Belcourt later died in hospital. An autopsy determined he died as a result of blunt craniocervical spine trauma.

Handbury remains in custody on unrelated outstanding warrants.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate Belcourt’s death.
