For the month of March, Edmonton Fire Rescue is accepting applications for firefighters. The job application process takes about a year and one of the steps along the way is the physical aptitude test.

Following the VO2 Max test, which measures cardiorespiratory fitness, applicants are tested at six stations that simulate the job-related physical requirements of structural firefighting, such as ladder climbs, vehicle extractions and victim rescues. The tests stress muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and aerobic power.

For the last decade Edmonton Fire Rescue has partnered with the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport and Recreation to conduct the physical testing in the Van Vliet Centre.
