pics, words – fish

Only a few weeks remain for the mesmerizing Angakkuq: Between Two Worlds – Spiritual and Mythological Figures in Inuit and Inuvialuit Art.

Guest curated by Edmonton’s Inuit Art Enthusiasts’ Bill and Michelle Tracy, the five-decade survey of dozens of artists – some anonymous – reveals a more permanent life to oral storytelling traditions of the island-dotted North. Twenty-two communities are represented.

Shapeshifters and anthropomorphic animals abound in whalebone, hides, antler, soapstone and beautiful prints. As you see here, there’s even a polar bear in a parka, a terrific symbol for us all this week. Behold!

This Saturday, PS, professional appraiser Nick Lebessis will be at the AGA’s Manning Hall for another instalment of Inuit Art Roadshow. Last round, two sculptures brought in were discovered to be worth nearly $50,000 each!

Registration is at 11 a.m. is $10, but with it comes a free verbal appraisal of any work you bring in. Lebessis will also give a talk at Ledcor Theatre at noon, and the free-to-watch public appraisals begin at 1:30 p.m. up in Manning.

Totem poles from the Vancouver airport with a Made in China sticker not so much, but if you’re curious if a mysterious treasure from your grandmother has additional value over sentimental, Lebessis might be able to shed some northern light.

Angakkuq runs through Feb. 17.
