Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Foster The People headline three-day Sonic Boom in Edmonton

That’s the sound of your brain exploding over this year’s bigger and better Sonic Boom roster.

Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Foster The People, Rise Against, Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara, and The New Pornographers are some of the performers at this year’s outdoor festival, which is expanding from two days to three — Aug. 29, 30 and 31 at Northlands.

White, one of rock’s most influential singers and guitarists, made his last visit to these parts in 2007, when he played the Shaw Conference Centre with his garage-rock duo, The White Stripes. He released his solo debut, Blunderbuss, in 2012, then hit the road with two backing bands — an all-male (The Buzzards) and all-female (The Peacocks). His second album, Lazaretto, is due June 10, but it’s not known what his touring configuration will be.

Foster The People, purveyors of 2011′s feel-bad hit of the summer, Pumped Up Kicks, will be making their first appearance in Edmonton. They just released their second album, Supermodel.

Other acts making their debuts include soul-popsters Fitz & The Tantrums, duo MS MR, and folk-rockers The Mowgli’s. (Yup, that’s how they spell it.)

Synth-pop twins Tegan & Sara lead the Canadian contingent, which also boasts rocker Serena Ryder, dream-pop act Stars, Hawksley Workman’s supergroup Mounties, and indie rockers July Talk.

Sonic Boom, produced by Union Events, shares most of its lineup with Calgary’s X-Fest, except our southern pals only get two days of music.

Tickets are $199.50 for general admission, $269.50 for VIP. On sale: Saturday, May 3 at Ticketmaster.ca.

Did we mention California punk icons The Descendents, Kentucky rockers Cage The Elephant and L.A.’s The Airborne Toxic Event are also on the bill?

Boom!
