With the weather starting to finally give indications that summer may be near, it’s hard not to want to spend all of your time outside. SAVOUR IT EDMONTON! Spend every minute you can enjoying this beautiful weather. I had the great fortune of witnessing outdoor activity at it’s finest – watching my neighbour learn to ride a bike.
Now you might be visualizing a four-year-old on a two-wheel bike, a mom or dad running behind holding on to the bike seat, but this experience was a little different. The four and six-year-old brothers were halfway down the block looking back at their Mom learning to ride a bike, with their dad running behind her holding the seat. It was beautiful! The whole family encouraging their mom, “You can do it Mom, pedal faster!”
What courage to learn a new skill! And what courage to learn a new skill that generally is learned when you are a child, AND one your children have already mastered. It reminded me of two life lessons: you are never too old and children are the best teachers!
On Saturday, April 26 ABC Head Start was honoured to be a part of Revolution Cycle’s Grand Expansion making them one of the largest bike shops in Western Canada (maybe even THE largest.) They had a BBQ and a big ol’ party in their back parking lot to celebrate with all of the proceeds of the BBQ going to ABC Head Start. As I watched the hundreds of people taking bikes for a spin that day and thought about my neighbour learning to ride a bike I thought “that looks FUN!” What a great way to enjoy the summer, and what a fun thing to do with my family.

To be honest I haven’t been on a bike since I was young. My Dad made a rule on our farm that you had to learn to ride a pedal bike before you could take out the dirt bike. I literally learned to ride a pedal bike just so I could dirt bike, then I never got back on that pedal bike again…but maybe now’s the time. And maybe my four-year-old nephew can teach me.
