pics, words – fish

Wednesday night after Viet Cong thundered over a fairly packed Starlite Room, Calgary’s Chad VanGaalen asked his bandmates why they don’t come to Edmonton more often.

This echoed a thing wondered.

Oscillating between backyard-fire raucous and Snow White singalong, it’s been a great decade watching the self-proclaimed “hulk of a man” turn Neil Young inside out with his beautiful voice and illustrator’s hand, melting and shrinking his song subjects with a body fixation found more commonly in the formerly fascist empires.

While it’ll be hard to forget the standee animal friends he once brought to Sidetrack, or the wide-angle awe of the legendary McDougall United show, Starlite was still a spectacle of rock, pop and briefly unleashed messy jazz. It was fuzzy, tough and pretty as the sky.

Please enjoy what little was captured for the eyes below …
