An Edmonton-based soldier was injured Monday during nighttime live-fire training in Wainwright.

The man was taken to a local hospital for immediate medical treatment and later transferred to an Edmonton hospital for further treatment.

The Canadian Forces would not disclose the man’s current medical condition or whether he’s still in hospital.

It’s not known what rank the member is or how old he is. The member was part of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

The incident is being treated as a training accident. An investigation will look into the causes and how accidents like this can be prevented, a news release from the armed forces said.

“Safely conducted live-fire training is essential for ensuring our soldiers are ready for operations around the world. The Canadian Armed Forces takes training accidents extremely seriously and this incident is being fully investigated in order to reduce future risk. In the meantime, our thoughts are with the soldier and his family for a speedy recovery,” Brig.-Gen. Wayne Eyre of the 3rd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force West said in a news release.

The Wainwright base is 210 kilometres east of Edmonton.
