Alberta heritage preservation projects from restoring a Second World War-era steam locomotive to studying Ismaili Muslim chants have reeled in $790,000 in government grants.

Sixty-one projects, including research projects, building restoration, theatre productions and pamphlets are receiving money from the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, the Alberta government announced Thursday.

Edmonton-based projects include a restoration of the Byzantine-style St. Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, improvements at the Strathcona Public Library (Edmonton’s oldest branch), and a touring show about the Alberta suffragettes who fought for women’s right to vote.

“We are proud to partner with individuals, organizations, municipalities and businesses in investing in projects that create knowledge and awareness of our past, pride in our communities, and economic growth for a strong future,” Minister of Culture and Tourism Dave Eggen said in a news release.
