pics, words – fish

You don’t want to say “where else but Edmonton,” because New York City and all, but Wednesday night vibrated with events, starting at Thea Bowering’s book launch of Love at Last Sight at Empress Ale House, where Jody Shenkarek and Gavin Dunn provided the music.

Bowering’s collection of short stories takes place in part in our city, but more importantly her words both hearken nostalgia and just as suddenly kick sentimentality over in exactly the way one would assume a longtime bar server could.

For example, “So I have always walked alleys alone, with my monster face, listening through a wall for the words that might cultivate me, that are contained within the homes of ex-lovers, the ones who caught a glimpse and ran away.”

You can/should get her book here, and read our story about it here.

Down the street, Bebop Cortez played a cover Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop with Amber Byrne singing, and after that Stepmothers played the CJSR fundraiser at Wunderbar.

It’s a good place we live, if you have the will to engage it.
