Take a song that shares its name with a city in California … shoot a video for it in Costa Rica … with a director from Edmonton.
Surfer and Maritime rocker Matt Mays provided the song, Indio, and the entire concept of the video. Michael Maxxis shot the clip:
“I really didn’t have to do much, other than point a camera and hit record,” says Maxxis. “Matt is a surfer, and spends a lot of time in various surf spots around the world. He was in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica for December, January, and part of Feb. this year, livin’ the life you see in the video.
“He sent me an email and said, ‘Hey, wanna come meet me in Costa Rica for a few days and shoot a video?’ It was a very easy decision for me. I went down there for 10 days in January with my girlfriend and a two-man crew, and just hung out with Matt and his friends. My girlfriend, Melanie Swerdan, has done all his photography for this album cycle and tour, including the poster you see around Edmonton promoting his show at The Starlite.
“Every element of this video was arranged by Matt. The bonfire, the driving on the beach, the cliff jumping, the surfing, the partying, the concert, etc. I didn’t contribute a single idea, other than how to treat the finished footage in the end … “
When he’s not surfing, Mays is touring … he performs Tuesday, March 26 at The Starlite Room. July Talk, featuring Edmonton expat Peter Dreimanis, is the opener.
Stay tuned for the next Maxxis video soon … for Raine Maida‘s Montreal, the first single off his solo album, We All Get Lighter, which drops March 26.
