The City of Edmonton is hopeful shoppers will rally around businesses in the High Street area during a “cash mob” on Saturday.

The event, which organizers hope will draw a critical mass of customers to the shopping district at 124th Street and 102nd Avenue, is being put on to drum up sales for businesses that have suffered during the prolonged closure of the 102 Avenue Bridge because of construction delays.

The initiative, spearheaded by Cash Mob Edmonton, in collaboration with the City and non-profit The Local Good, has a simple aim: get people spending money in the numerous small businesses in the area.

The official event will run between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

At 2:30 p.m., Mayor Don Iveson and Councillor Scott McKeen are expected to attend.

To make getting there easier, a “Park and Ride” service will be offered, leaving every 35 minutes from Hawrelak Park and Stadium West Park from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., with a shuttle service running up and down 124th Street.
